I’ve met yesterday with Craig Brown of Better Projects. This was a follow up on a meeting we’ve had roughly a month ago. We agreed then to meet again and review current project management blogs in an attempt to understand their drive, motivation, appeal and coverage. Not sure exectly what drove us to go down that path (actually I think it was Craig’s idea – although not quite using these specific words).
Anyway, with Craig doing an excellent job in facilitating a brain storming discussion (the results of which you can see here), we agreed on a preliminary method for carving the various blogs into a space where the key differentiating factor is their target audience, something along the proposed Seven Stages of Expertise model (Meilir Page-Jones, 1998). Using this model we concluded that different blogs aim at different levels of readership, who play different maturity roles along the spectrum that starts at the ‘Apprentice’ level and leading up all the way to a ‘Master’. With that in mind, some blogs target their posts to those making their first steps in the Project Management world, while others aim at the more experienced, and so on.
I think we agreed that most (if not all) blogs are out there to provide some sort of support (with some aim at deriving some financial reward) to their perceived target audience. This led us to a discussion around the possibility of extending that support from the provision of passive, static information, to live, on-line, on-request, mentoring.
Can we imagine a scenario where all that massive intellect, currently hidden behind the large number of Project Management blogs, turning into a world-wide collaborative engine, all aimed at suppoting and assisting fellow professionals?
At this stage this is nothing but WIP, but with a little bit more thinking, and support from the Project Management community, we hope we can turn this idea into a reality.
Think about it!

That’s beautiful!!! you’re a fountain of knowledge mate.
Just found the Aus MOD site was lots of good risk and IT procurement materials. Thanks for being on that side of the world, while we implode on this side. Kym Henderson is an Ausie MoD guy I’ll see at EVM World coming up soon.
I guess we do miss some of the excitement of being able to directly interact with some of the leading names in the northern hemisphere. I looked up Kym’s details and it certainly looks like someone who’s got a lot to offer. I’m not aware of any OZ EVM conference occurring any time soon. Are you aware of any such events taking place down-under?
Shim,
Kym is a leader of the PMI EVM Community of Practice and heads up the Practice section where I’m presenting a paper on “calculating schedule margin using Monte Carlo Simulation.”
